The Kings will likely claim that the clock didn’t start until after the ball was in Lee’s hands, which would set back the whole sequence to a point at which the backboard would have already gone red before the ball was fully in the air.
Of course, if the Kings want to find the real culprit for the loss, they need to look no further than their own locker room. The team blew a 26-point lead against the Grizzlies before allowing the game to get as close as it did. While it is hard to believe an inbound-ball can legally get in the hoop with less than half a second on the clock, it’s even harder to believe the NBA will do anything to change the outcome.
The Kings are essentially relying on speculative timing in their claim, saying that if the clock had started at X moment, then the ball wouldn’t have gone in at Y moment. That likely won’t be enough for the NBA to take the wildly unpopular stance of changing a game’s result after the fact. Expect little if anything to come as a result of this challenge.
