The ugly situation with Bill Cosby and his rape allegations isn’t going anywhere. It is unfortunate, then, to hear Cosby joking about drugging women all the way back in a 1969 stand-up comedy routine.
It’s not just that Bill Cosby joked about drugging women during a 1969 comedy routine. It’s that he did so with such ease, such joy.

Sure, times have changed as far as these types of difficult conversations. And yes, it seems only slightly relevant to hold a 1969 comedy routine against Cosby while he deals with rape allegations; those allegations can and should stand on their own in their horrifying nature.
Still, it is disconcerting to hear hints that Cosby never understood the seriousness of this issue.
There is risk in reading too much into a comedy routine, but then again, it also wouldn’t be wise to ignore the fact that comedy often serves to reveal kernels of truth about how that person feels about certain issues.
Check out the audio of the routine below, which comes from his 1969 album entitled, “It’s Time! It’s Time!” At issue is the drug “Spanish Fly,” which was apparently used to drug women.
Unfortunately, Cosby has proven to be out of touch and kind of crazy on a number of other issues as well. It’s just that this issue is so much more real and serious, and in this case, it makes an old stand-up routine especially cringe-worthy.
