The Colorado Avalanche‘s Ryan Wilson is done for the season, needs shoulder surgery

The Colorado Avalanche have been hoping for seasons that Ryan Wilson will shake off his injury funk and duplicate his success from seasons past; unfortunately, that doesn’t seem to be the case.

Back when he started in the NHL, Wilson was an effective blue liner with an offensive streak. He posted 58 points in 187 games between 2009 and 2012; subsequently, the team re-signed the defenseman for a three year, $6.7 million dollar contract. Not bad for an overlooked, undrafted defenseman.

It seems as though his contract extension was a curse, though; since the 2011-2012 season, Wilson has yet to play more than half a season. The 2012-2013 season? 12 games. 2013-2014? 28. Injuries have hindered him signficantly, and it looks like they’ll ultimately be his undoing.

According to NBC’s Pro Hockey Talk, the shoulder injury Wilson sustained during a game against the Florida Panthers last month — originally projected to keep him out for 2-3 weeks at most — will require season-ending surgery. He has only played in three games this season, and posted a less-than-impressive -3 during them.

With his contract expiring at the end of this season, it seems more than likely that this will be Wilson’s last season with the Avalanche — potentially in the NHL altogether.
