Today the NFL ruled that Adrian Peterson is suspended without pay for the remainder of the season, but even with that, there’s a chance the running back could be on the field Sunday.

The Minnesota Vikings have been awaiting the fate of their star running back, Adrian Peterson, for a matter of weeks now. With the NFL announcing this morning that Peterson would be suspended without pay for the remainder of the season, that fate seems to be all but sealed.

However, there seems to be one caveat.

Yesterday, the NFL and the NFLPA met with an arbitrator to discuss the language set forth in a letter that was agreed upon by both the NFL and Adrian Peterson upon his legal findings.

The letter mentioned that once Peterson has his legal issues cleared up, he would be removed from the Commissioner’s Exempt List and immediately reinstated.

Although the NFL has ruled Peterson is suspended, the arbitrator has yet to rule on the grievance hearing that was overheard yesterday.

Should the arbitrator rule in Peterson’s favor, things could change drastically.

As Albert Breer points out, there is still some things left to be sorted out with the situation, and undoubtedly, there are a lot of “ifs” involved in the situation.

While it has to be considered a long shot, it is fair to assume that Adrian Peterson has a decent possibility of winning his grievance hearing. If the language in his agreed upon letter is cut and dry, the arbitrator could rule the NFL was out of line. The idea that his suspension appeal would still be undecided is another issue, however.

No matter what happens, it looks like this saga is not yet over, and that the NFL has definitely ventured into uncharted waters.
