Tim Duncan is currently 38 years old, and the San Antonio Spurs know that they don’t have too much longer with one of the best players in NBA history. They are beginning to look around for potential replacements for him, but that is going to be very difficult to find.

According to a report from Matt Moore of CBS Sports, the Spurs are beginning to view current Memphis Grizzlies’ big man Marc Gasol as a potential replacement for Duncan.
Gasol has a very similar game to Duncan, but he still wouldn’t be the type of leader that the Spurs have with their long-time power forward. He would be able to come in and fill Duncan’s spot in the lineup and play the same type of role, but it would certainly be a step down.
That is not being down on Gasol in any way shape or form, it is simply a fact with how good Duncan has been throughout his career with the Spurs.
So far this season in 11 games with the Grizzlies, Gasol has averaged 17.6 points, 7.4 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game. He has shot 45.8 percent from the field overall, and has also dished out 3.3 assists per game. Those numbers are not bad at all, and he is setting himself up to get a very nice payday this coming offseason.
At 29 years of age, Gasol will be looking at a big contract that could end up being the last big deal of his career. The Spurs would be a very nice fit for him, and they would help him continue to improve and hone his craft. All of this would depend on whether or not the Spurs were able to spend the type of money that Gasol wants.
That being said, the Spurs are very smart to have interest in Gasol moving forward. He is a very talented player that has a similar game to Duncan and could help them ice down the swelling that Duncan retiring would leave. Gasol may not be the best big man in the game, but he is a very solid all-around player and will be very valuable to any team that picks him up.
