The Saints aren’t having a very good year. They’re 4-6, but somehow tied for first atop the NFC South with the Atlanta Falcons. They’re also on a two game losing streak, so that might not last. Their latest loss came against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday, and it turns out they are also losing their top wideout for the rest of the year, thanks to a broken thumb.
The Saints placed Brandin Cooks on injured reserve on Tuesday, according to Pro Football Talk, and effectively ended his season. Cooks was initially reported to have a broken thumb and was expected to be out for at least two weeks and up to six. However, Field Yates of ESPN added that Cooks might also have a wrist injury as well as the thumb injury. Whatever the case, the Saints decided to IR the promising receiver on Tuesday.
Cooks’ final numbers are 53 catches for 550 yards and three touchdowns. He also had seven rushes for 73 yards and a touchdown, as well as 10 punt returns for 35 yards and one kick return for 12 yards. Cooks was a huge part of the Saints offense all year and he will be missed as the team struggles to stay atop their division. He should continue to be a key contributor next season when he returns from injury.
The Saints are preparing to face the Baltimore Ravens on Monday in New Orleans.
