The Dallas Stars hope to seal the deal on a contract extension with pending FA Jason Spezza

The Dallas Stars don’t have a whole lot to boast about this season.

A seven-game losing streak and a key injury to star sophomore forward Valeri Nichushkin have relegated a team once considered a powerhouse in the NHL to the bottom of the league; as the twenty-game mark approaches, the Stars have a 6-8-4 record. This is good for the bottom of the Central Division, and things aren’t looking much better.

One of the few bright spots this fall, though, has been the addition of veteran centre Jason Spezza.

Traded at the NHL Entry draft from the Ottawa Senators in exchange for Alex Chiasson, Alexander Guptill, Ludwig Karlsson, Nicholas Paul, and a 2015 second round selection, Spezza is finishing up on the final year of his seven-year, $49 million dollar contract. Should the Stars be unable to come to an agreement with him, it’s widely speculated that he’d be the talk of the league during this summer’s free agency.

Many Stars fans hoped that Spezza would be a vital key in the team’s rise to competitive status; a lack of consistent defense, though, in addition to the letdown Spezza former linemate Ales Hemsky has turned out to be thus far, has kept the team from seeing the results they desired.

Should the team crank out this contract, though, a less than stellar 2014-2015 season could be just the beginning of bigger and better things.
