The game between the two rivals should be plenty interesting all by itself with its championship implications, not to mention the rivalry. However, there’s an added attraction for fans of college football uniforms or just fans who prefer home uniforms to road uniforms. Both USC and UCLA will be wearing their home jerseys for the game, as revealed by College Football Talk on Tuesday.

USC and UCLA will be continuing a long tradition by wearing their home jerseys against each other at Rose Bowl Stadium. The tradition got started back when both teams played at the Los Angeles Coliseum. They wore their home uniforms through 1983, when the tradition of wearing white uniforms as a road team got started. The tradition was brought back in 2008, despite NCAA rules disallowing it.

Then USC coach Pete Carroll decided to observe the tradition in spite of the rules. His team gave up a time-out in the game as punishment and UCLA head coach Rick Neuheisel agreed to do the same to make the game fair. Neuheisel didn’t actually have to give up the time-out as his team was the home team at the time, but did so in the spirit of tradition and sportsmanship.

In 2011, Neuheisel paused the tradition by deciding that his team would not wear their home jerseys for the game with USC, but the teams brought it back again in 2012 and now again for 2014.
