Considering the severity of a medical condition such as this one, it is an incredibly good thing that they caught this one early.
The condition was discovered on Monday when Dupuis was seen by Penguins team doctor Dharmesh Vyas after complaining of pain in his chest.
According to Dr. Vyas, the clot started in the 35 year old forward’s leg and travelled to his lung.
"“In medical terms, that is a deep vein thrombosis resulting in a pulmonary embolism. This is the second such incident that we know of for Pascal. The treatment is at least six months of blood thinners, during which time he will not be able to play hockey. Other than that, his condition is stable.” Dr. Vyas said via the Official Team Site."
That bad news is, this is not the first time that Dupuis has suffered from this condition. He underwent a similar course of treatment back in January when he was diagnosed with a clot that formed as a result of a surgery he underwent to repair torn ligaments in his knee.
Unfortunately, it is common for someone who has experienced this condition to see a recurrence; however, it is disheartening to see it happen again so soon after his first diagnosis.
This is certainly a hit to the Penguins offense. Dupuis has suited up in 16 games with the Pens this season. In that amount of time the Laval, Quebec native has netted 6 goals and 5 assists for a total of 11 points to accompany a plus-2 rating. This is Dupuis’ eighth season with the Penguins organization.
Hockey rivalries aside, we never want to see anyone suffer a setback like this one; especially considering the life-threatening nature of the diagnosis. We here at FanSided wish Pascal Dupuis a speedy recovery and hope to see him out on the ice again soon.
Next up for the Penguins, they will play host to captain John Tavares and the New York Islanders on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
