The Big 12 was facing a potential crisis with college football realignment underway. Ultimately, multiple schools left, one of which was Texas A&M.
At the time Texas A&M hadn’t been the strongest of contenders in the conference, but they’ve played well in the SEC, thanks in part to Johnny Manziel. When Texas A&M left, their rivals, the Texas Longhorns, vowed to never play them again.
While that upset a lot of fans, it was a bitter move. Fortunately for the Longhorns had they played the Aggies since their parting of ways, they probably would’ve come out on the losing end as they struggled through disappointing seasons as A&M has thrived.
With the Longhorns playing very mediocre football at the moment, there is a chance they could be paired up with the Aggies once again, in a bowl game with SEC and Big 12 ties.
The SEC and Texas A&M have no interest in doing this and would squash that dream match up and ruin everyone’s fun.
From Chip Brown of Horns Digest:
"Two sources close to the situation told HornsDigest.com SEC officials have indicated to bowls with SEC and Big 12 tie-ins that the SEC won’t support a Texas vs Texas A&M postseason matchup. In short, A&M has too much to lose from a potential loss."
It is interesting though, the Aggies would have to feel like the better team at 7-4, with the Longhorns sitting at 6-5. The Longhorns won the last meeting and the Aggies would have an opportunity to get a win to hold over the Longhorns till the next time they play.
They must not feel too terribly confident in their abilities if they’re planning on nixing the idea cause they have too much too lose.
