The Philadelphia Eagles made the touch call to cut wide receiver DeSean Jackson last spring. He decided to join the Eagles’ divisional rivals, the Washington Redskins in April but as expected, there were other teams that were interested.
One of those was the San Francisco 49ers, who were only available to offer a deal that would see Jackson giving the team a discount.
“I did have a couple talks. Coach Harbaugh and myself, we played against each other back at Cal when he was at Stanford,” Jackson explained, via the 49ers’ official website. “I respect him. It was a tough call, but I chose to come here instead.
“At the end of the day, they made it right for me to stay here in Washington, and even though I’m born and raised in California and would love to be there, love to play there, it was just a better fit and a better situation for me to be where I’m at now.”
So it sounds like DeSean was all about the money with the “they made it right for me.” He passed up a chance to join a talented 49ers team that had made it to three consecutive NFC Championship games and one Super Bowl.
And oh yeah, there is that whole hometown connection.
We’ll see if Jackson is looking to join a team to five him a shot at winning a Super Bowl later in his career, and if that day comes he might regret choosing the Redskins over the 49ers.
