Jason Spezza Signs Four-Year Extension With Stars
After only 20 games of being in the organization, the Dallas Stars lock Jason Spezza up for four more years.
The Dallas Stars must really like what they have seen from Jason Spezza in the first 20 games of the NHL season. The Stars and Spezza agreed this morning on an extension that will keep the Ontario-born forward in Dallas for the next four years.
Financial terms have not yet been released by the Dallas Stars. However, TSN’s Bob McKenzie reported that the deal is worth $7.5 million per year.

That is a pretty big amount for someone who will be turning 32 once this extension kicks in.
Spezza, 31, has had a great start to his career in Dallas after being traded from Ottawa this past off-season. He has 18 points (4 goals, 14 assists) through the first 20 games so far this season. He also just recently joined the 700 point club in the NHL.
There is no doubt the talent and skill Spezza brings to the table. However, the Dallas Stars will be paying a premium for a player who is most likely entering his declining years in his career. Also, he will be being paid like a number one center, while realistically he’d be the number two behind Tyler Seguin.
Centers of Spezza’s skill level are hard to come by, so I feel this is a deal Dallas had to make. Having a one-two punch like Seguin and Spezza is certainly not a bad thing, especially when you throw Jamie Benn into that mix. If Spezza can continue producing like he has so far this season, this deal will be well worth it for the Stars.
