Voynov was arrested back on October 20th after taking his wife Marta to the hospital for injuries that appeared to be inflicted by Slava Voynov himself. The couple were arguing the night before at their home, it escalated and Voynov caused injuries to his wife’s eyebrow’s, cheek and neck. The injuries were severe enough that required medical attention.
Not only could Voynov be facing up to nine years of jail time if convicted, it’s possible the Russian NHL defenseman could even be deported.
Voynov continues his suspension with pay from the NHL while he waits for his arraignment on December 1st. It deserves to be noted that his wife had told the police that she didn’t think a crime was committed and did not want her husband arrested. She could very well mean that, or she could just be blindly defending her husband. I assume that is why the District Attorney’s office went ahead and filed charges anyway.
We will find out soon enough whether Voynov truly harmed his wife or it was just a huge understanding.
