After going more than a year without an SEC win, the Arkansas Razorbacks have won back-to-back conference games with an upset win against the Ole Miss Rebels

More from College Football

Arkansas made their fans be patient for their first SEC win under head coach Bret Bielema after a winless SEC record in his first year in Fayetteville in 2013, but after beating rival LSU and taking the Golden Boot back to Arkansas, the Hogs now have a two-game winning streak in the conference after upsetting No. 8 Ole Miss.

This was the first time in Arkansas history that they have won in shutout fashion in back-to-backs and the first time an unranked team has shutout a ranked opponent in back-to-back games.

  • Ole Miss entered the game with the No. 1 scoring defense but it was the Arkansas defense that set the tone from a rain-soaked Razorback Stadium on Saturday as the Hogs forced six turnovers, including a 100-yard interception return from Rohan Gaines, and held the Rebels to   rushing yards. Ole Miss ran 33 times for 63 yards, an average of 1.9 yards per carry.

Arkansas’ offense gave the defense all they would need when they scored on their third offensive play of the game when Brandon Allen connected with Keon Hatcher for a 25-yard touchdown less than five minutes into the game.

On the ensuing possession, Ole Miss quarterback Bo Wallace fumbled on their second play of the drive after Martrell Spaight stripped him and the ball was recovered by Ark Trey Flowers. Arkansas would get a 22-yard field goal from Adam McFain to take a 10-0 lead.

Following an Ole Miss punt, Allen led Arkansas on a nine-play, 49-yard touchdown drive that was capped with Alex Collins punching it in from one yard out to take a 17-0 lead at the end of a first quarter completely dominated by the Hogs.

The second quarter didn’t offer any positives for the Rebels as it became clear that it just wasn’t their day today.

Wallace was sacked by Darius Philon who also forced a fumble that was recovered by Tevin Beanum. Wallace was hurt on the play and left temporarily before returning only to leave in the fourth quarter with what was reported as a high ankle sprain during the broadcast, so his status for the Egg Bowl against Mississippi State could be in doubt.

  • Arkansas would deal with their own injured quarterback as Allen injured his back early in the second quarter and did not return. He was replaced by younger brother Austin Allen who served as the caretaker of the offense and sat on the big lead they built in the first quarter. Austin finished with 65 yards on 3-of-5 passing while Brandon was 5-of-10 for 87 yards and a touchdown.

Alex Collins and Jonathan Williams ran for a combined 160 yards and a touchdown on 43 carries.

The story of the afternoon was the stout and opportunistic Arkansas defense who picked off Wallace twice in the end zone, once by Tevin Mitchell in the second and once by Gaines whose 100-yard pick-six was the final nail in the coffin for the Rebels who still clung to a slim hope of winning the SEC west.

With the loss, Ole Miss is eliminated from the division title chase and will look to play spoiler against Mississippi State next weekend in Oxford and keep them out of the playoff with Wallace’s health a big question

Meanwhile, Arkansas clinched a bowl berth and has momentum heading into their regular season finale against Tennessee who could need a win to clinch a bowl berth if they lose tonight to Missouri.
