The netminder, who the Devils acquired from the Vancouver Canucks at the 2013 NHL Entry Draft for their 9th overall draft pick, has been an absolute workhorse this season. The guy never takes a day off — literally.
On Friday night, the Massachusetts native started in his twentieth consecutive game, breaking the franchise record set by Martin Brodeur in 2001. He went into the game leading the league in games started, games played, and logged on-ice minutes; nineteen games into the season, Schneider has 1,078:58 minutes under his glove.
While Schneider has undoubtedly played well for the Devils, though, many criticize the team for their seeming overuse of the starter. A quarter of the way into the season and he hasn’t had a single break, playing in three sets of back-to-back games and having to be yanked four times.
When asked about the decision to put the 28 year old in net 20 times in 20 games, Devils head coach Peter DeBoer seemed surprised that it’s happened.
So… when he plays well, they play him again to keep the streak alive — and when he plays poorly, they play him again so he has a chance to bounce back?
Ah. Well, Cory Schneider is apparently playing in 82 games this season, then.
The team will play their second of game of the fourth back-to-back series this season on Saturday, against the Calgary Flames. Since the team hasn’t confirmed whether they’re going for 21 or not, let’s just assume they are.
