The Boston Bruins have been stretched a little thin this season.

An unexpectedly low salary cap for the 2014-2015 season, coupled with some hefty bonus overage fees from money awarded to rookies and vets last year, left the Atlantic Division powerhouse tight on funds — and low on players.
The team had to make a couple of tough choices, such as allowing top-line right wing Jarome Iginla sign with the Colorado Avalanche and trading top-four blue liner Johnny Boychuk to the New York Islanders for draft picks, in order to squeeze under the cap and re-sign a few key restricted free agents. They were left with little in the way of experienced players to spare, though, and have spent the better part of these first few months trying out prospect after prospect with the big club.
Once it seemed they had found their fits, though, they were bitten by the injury bug.
In addition to a few key injuries on defense, the team has been short alternate captains Chris Kelly and David Krejci on a day-to-day basis. They’ve also got top-six left wing Brad Marchand on injured reserve; and while they’ve been trying to hold things down on their own end of the ice, they’re sorely in need of some scorepower.
Luckily, the team drafted a very David Krejci-like player in the 2014 NHL Draft… and he’s been firing up the offense on the team’s AHL affiliate, the Providence Bruins, all season.
The team announced Sunday afternoon that their first-round pick from this summer’s entry draft, David Pastrnak, has been recalled from the AHL. He’s heading straight to Pittsburgh, where it’s entirely likely he’ll debut with the team against the Penguins Monday night.
The offensively gifted left wing, who has spent the past two years skating for the men’s league in Sweden, has 5 goals and 13 assists in his first 17 games with the P-Bruins. Hopefully, he’ll be able to bring that firepower to the big club, as well.
