The Buffalo Sabres pull off third consecutive win in 2-1 victory over the Washington Capitals

It doesn’t make much sense, but the Buffalo Sabres took home a 2-1 victory on Saturday night.

Prior to this week, the Sabres has essentially been the uncontested worst team in the NHL. They held the Toronto Maple Leafs to the lowest shots on goal (10) during a game since January of 2002, and were the last team to hit the double digits in points — falling behind even the ‘winless in October’ Carolina Hurricanes and the Columbus Blue Jackets, who had nine roster players out with injury early on in the season.

Saturday night’s win wasn’t necessarily an indicator that they’re much better than last place; the Capitals outshot the Sabres 44-26 and won sixty percent of the faceoff wins over the three periods of regulation play.

Buffalo may not particularly care, though — this victory brought them their first three-game win streak since beating the Carolina Hurricanes, Boston Bruins, and San Jose Sharks back in February of 2014.

In addition, these three consecutive wins — recorded over the Capitals, the Sharks, and the Maple Leafs — have pulled them out of the definitive last place position in the NHL.

Technically, the Sabres are still 30th of 30, based on games played, ROW (regular plus overtime wins), and goal differential. They still retain a league-low -35 goal differential for the season, a full nine goals behind the 29th place team, the Edmonton Oilers.

Luckily for the Sabres, the Oilers are on yet another monstrous losing streak; it may not mean much to pull ahead of Edmonton right now, but finally getting a chance to sit outside the last place spot might feel pretty nice.
