The Houston Texans lost quarterback Ryan Mallett for the remainder of the season to a bicep injury, which has prompted the team to sign Thad Lewis to replace him.

When the Houston Texans traded for Ryan Mallett, the idea was that they’d try him out and see if he could be their answer as a franchise quarterback. It turns out that he’s probably not that answer, with a season-ending injury taking him out of the running for good.

Houston still needs to find an answer at quarterback though, which has prompted them to sign a wild card free agent to replace Mallett on the active roster.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Texans will be signing former Buffalo Bills quarterback Thad Lewis to fill the hole created by losing Ryan Mallett for the remainder of the season.

This isn’t all that relevant though, as what the Mallett injury really means is that the Tom Savage era in Houston is about to prematurely begin. With Houston out of the playoff hunt and looking at a middle of the pack draft pick this spring, the Texans will be trying out all quarterback options to see if they have the answer on roster or need to draft one.

Being in a position to select Marcus Mariota may not be an option, but quarterbacks like Jameis Winston, Brett Hundley or even Sean Mannion may be options in the middle of the first or second round for Houston. They spent a middle round pick on Savage this past year, so investing in two project quarterbacks may not be wise — unless it’s confirmed that one of them isn’t up to par.

Leave it to Thad Lewis though to come in and shock the world by winning the franchise quarterback job — maybe, but not probably.
