Nintendo Calls New Cash Grab Amiibo
Amiibo is Nintendo’s newest accessory, and while great in theory, the collectible gaming toys may spell disaster for the industry.

As Super Smash Bros has now hit the market and the Nintendo Wii U has yet another reason to be the console, Nintendo has also introduced a new accessory product line. With the launch of Amiibo’s, Nintendo has entered into a dark area in the gaming world, and there may be no coming back from this.
Looking at Activision, the company can essentially print its own money with the amount of success and revenue that the Skylanders series has created the company. In selling both toys and gaming accessories at the same time, Activision has created a whole new money generating venture for the company, Nintendo intends to do the same.
Last week on Twitter, Nintendo explained the Amiibo is your friend, but I’m here to tell you it’s anything but.
Sure, sell it as your little buddy, but the fact of the matter is that each Amiibo represents huge dollar signs in the eyes of every Nintendo executive.
The functionality of these new collectibles remains next to nonexistent. Sure you can level them up as you play with them, but in game (a game you already paid $60 for), the $13 Amiibo does little except present you with a new weapon or costume choice. The functionality of the toy itself is simply a piece of art rather than being any sort of action figure.
Skylanders is incredibly successful and makes Activision boatloads of cash, but Activision also isn’t one of the big three. First and foremost, the label is out to find new ways to succeed and generate revenue. With Nintendo stepping into the same ring, a dangerous unraveling could take place.
With Nintendo being one of the big three gaming companies, Microsoft and Sony being the others, stepping into the ring with a game like Skylanders or Disney Infinity isn’t something gamers should be excited to embrace. In the world of microtransactions and game content being presented as DLC, accessories like Amibo’s should be left as the gimmicks handed out bythe gaming companies, not the figure heads the run the realm.
There’s nothing wrong with Amiibo’s as a product, unfortunately I can’t get behind the company implementing them and the clear message it sends.
