The injury is a big blow for a Houston team that is trying to stay in the playoff race. At 5-6 the Texans are a longshot at best at this point, but Mallett’s injury certainly makes the team’s chances decline even further.
The injury also puts the Texans in a tough spot this coming offseason. Houston traded with the New England Patriots for Mallett just before the season. They were hoping to use this season to see if he could become their long-term solution at the position, but instead were only able to get two games from the young quarterback.
If there is a silver lining for Houston here, it is that Mallett did not meet the escalators in the trade agreement before the injury. The experiment will only cost the Texans a seventh round pick.
Houston will now almost certainly return to Ryan Fitzpatrick at quarterback. Fitzpatrick wasn’t horrible at the beginning of the season before being benched for Mallett, but lacks the upside and future potential that Mallett brought to the position.
