Troy Smith is the last player from Ohio State to win the Heisman Trophy when he set a school record for 30 touchdown passes and led the buckeyes to the national title game in 2006 when he took home the trophy. As a former winner Smith has a vote and if these comments are any indication where he’s leaning, he’ll be casting his vote for J.T. Barrett who broke his touchdown record this season.

"“I have a tremendous amount of respect for that process and have an understanding of what it takes to win the Heisman Trophy, and I think it shouldn’t be awarded until the last game of whoever is in the standings or whichever candidates are playing, because you never know who is going to have that breakout moment,” Smith said, via ESPN. “There is great talent across the nation, but I’m definitely biased toward some of the guys who have worn the scarlet and gray if they are up there.“But you didn’t hear that from me.”"

Barrett threw for 302 yards and four touchdowns on Saturday as he broke Braxton Miller’s single-season record for total offense in addition to Smith’s touchdown record. He has 3,507 yards of offense (2,658 passing, 849 rushing) and is second in the FBS with 33 passing touchdowns, the most of any Power 5 player. His 42 combined touchdowns are tied for the most in the nation with Marcus Mariota.

Ohio State has Michigan and the Big Ten Championship Game against either Minnesota or Wisconsin as Barrett has two games left to try and boost his resume before the ceremony. If he gets seven more passing touchdowns he will break Drew Brees’ Big Ten single-season touchdown record.

Sounds like he could be receiving a few more votes than Smith’s with a dominant stretch over the next two weeks.
