Verne Lundquist To Receive Walter Camp’s ‘Distinguished American’

Verne Lundquist has been in broadcasting for more than a half-century and the Walter Camp Football Foundation will honor him with one of its highest awards.
The Walter Camp Football Foundation announced Monday that longtime broadcaster Verne Lundquist will be the 2014 recipient of its Distinguished American award.
The 74-year-old Lundquist began his career in Texas and became the radio voice of the Dallas Cowboys in 1967 and remained in that post until 1984, even as his career burgeoned to working for ABC Sports from 1974-81.

He’s been with CBS Sports since 1982 and has broadcast college football and basketball along with the NFL, NBA, PGA golf and Olympic figure skating.
He is currently the network’s lead college football announcer, assigned to SEC games during the regular season.
Inducted into the National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association Hall of Fame in 2007, Lundquist joins Pat Summerall and Keith Jackson as other broadcasters honored by Walter Camp.
"“We are honored to recognize a legendary sports broadcaster with this prestigious award,” foundation president James Monico said. “Verne Lundquist’s passion for college football—and sports in general—is evident through his colorful approach, memorable broadcast calls and popularity in general.”"
He will receive his award in January at the foundation’s annual national awards banquet at Yale University.
Born in Duluth, Minn., and raised in Texas, Lundquist currently lives in Steamboat Springs, Colo.
