I guess the Central Michigan captains saw what the Maryland captains did a few weeks back when they refused to partake in the pregame shakes before they played Penn State and thought it was cool enough to duplicate.
Most of the fans didn’t like this because we don’t like when our athletes don’t act in sportsmanlike-fashion. Neither did the Mid-American Conference.
Monday the MAC released a statment that they would reprimand the four captains and support the university if they wish to take away the titles from the players.
"“Sportsmanship is among the core values of intercollegiate athletics and a value reinforced by members of the Mid-American Conference,” commissioner Jon Steinbrecher said in a statement. “While the pre-game handshake is a simple gesture, it is one that is symbolic of the ethics and traditions of the game. Team captains are expected to demonstrate leadership and have a responsibility to pattern behavior that exemplifies the very best values of the team and institution they represent.”"
What makes this situation even more awkward is that Central Michigan ended up losing the game 32-20. It’s one thing to try to act like you’re too good to shake hands with a man, but it’s another thing when you don’t back it up and win the game.
