Perhaps Yasmany Tomas can put together his own version of “The Bachelor,” because the Cuban slugger has plenty of suitors willing to woo him to the tune of as much as $90 million.
The Arizona Diamondbacks are now the latest team in search of Tomas, as they have become the third National League West team making a serious bid for the 6’4, 240-pound outfielder. The Diamondbacks have shown “legit interest” and will try to overtake the Braves and Phillies, who are considered the front-runners for the 24-year-old.
With the loss of 3B Pablo Sandoval to the Red Sox via free agency, the Giants are making a stronger effort to acquire Tomas, while the Padres were among the first teams to show interest. Tomas will be the latest former Cuban National Team member to make the jump to the majors, joining White Sox first baseman and American League Rookie of the Year Jose Abreu, Dodgers All-Star outfielder Yasiel Puig and Red Sox outfielder Rusney Castillo.
Whoever does get first dibs in signing Tomas had better break a couple of armored cars, as Tomas will exceed the $72.5 million Castillo received from the Red Sox this summer. In a post-PED world, Tomas’ 35-40 home run potential brings even more value, though it will be interesting to see how he’d fare in a pitching-friendly park like the Giants and Padres play in.
