According to Forbes, the Toronto Maple Leafs are worth an estimated seven times more than the Florida Panthers

Not sure which is less shocking; that the Toronto Maple Leafs are worth seven times as much as the Florida Panthers, or that the Florida Panthers had actually been misrepresented in last year’s Forbes NHL Value rankings.

With Forbes releasing their annual team valuations list for the league, fans got to see exactly how much (well, estimated) their team is worth.

Some numbers weren’t really a shock. The Toronto Maple Leafs are still number one on the list, which explains why their fans go nuts when they lose games. They’re also one of three teams in the league — along with the Montreal Canadiens and the New York Rangers — who are worth over one billion dollars.

The Dallas Stars get a nod for rounding out the top fifteen, despite being in a ‘non-traditional’ hockey market — they ranked above the Ottawa Senators and the Buffalo Sabres, ruining credibility for the occasional criticism from fans that Texas can’t support a hockey team. Los Angeles also deserves a mention, coming in eighth in the league with an estimated value of $580 million. Forbes explained it; championships increase your worth.

"“Two Stanley Cups are worth about $100 million in major partnership renewals and new sponsorships during the three months following the Kings triumph over the New York Rangers, according to the SportsBusiness Journal.”"

Surprisingly enough, the Arizona Coyotes weren’t in the bottom three teams — those honors went to the Carolina Hurricanes, the Columbus Blue Jackets, and the Florida Panthers. Florida’s estimated worth is around $190 million, making them the only team worth less than $200 million. Both the New York Islanders and the Coyotes are expected to make big leaps this season in value, as they both saw monetary injections this fall from new ownership.

Forbes calculated the estimated enterprise valuation for each team by combining team equity with net team and arena debt. They reported that the new media deal with Canadian broadcasting network Rogers Communications, worth an estimated $4.6 billion, raised league revenue by over eighteen percent and elevated the average NHL team value to $490 million (a league record high).
