Pitcher Max Scherzer is one of the top free agents available, but interest in the former American League Cy Young winner is tepid thus far.

For a recent Cy Young winner, Max Scherzer must feel awful lonely when it comes to garnering attention on the free agent market.

With much of Scherzer’s fate tied into where fellow free agent pitcher Jon Lester lands, the market for the 2013 American League Cy Young award winner has yet to develop. However, there is one theory that makes tons of sense, according to baseball writer Bob Klapisch: The Yankees.

It makes sense, considering that the Pinstripes suffered from a rash of injuries in the rotation last season, as C.C. Sabathia and even newcomer Masahiro Tanaka spent extensive time on the disabled list. The team is unsure if Brandon McCarthy will return and no one in their right mind has much faith in Michael Pineda making 30-plus starts.

Yet, there appears to be a huge problem with Klapisch’s theory: the Yankees aren’t interested.

"“It’s not going to happen,” is what one Yankees elder told me, referring to a high-price courtship of Scherzer. Another executive said he could “guarantee” the Bombers would pass."

If that’s the case, then the Yanks are either playing a dangerous game of Starting Rotation Chicken by banking on their current cast of characters and/or also hoping/wishing/praying that the likes of Sabathia, Carlos Beltran, Mark Teixeria and even Alex Rodriguez can turn back the clock for at least one more season.

Should the latter be their option, good luck. And then some.
