Martin Brodeur could be back; signs tryout contract with St. Louis Blues

Most New Jersey Devils fans had their hearts broken this summer, when elite goaltender Martin Brodeur announced he’d try to find work elsewhere.

It’s no secret the goalie, widely considered the greatest of all time, will head back to the Devils to take up a position with the team’s brass once he has retired. Most fans just assumed that retirement would come after… well, his final season with the Devils.

By the end of the off-season, though, it became clear that no teams were interested in signing on the 42-year-old netminder. He would have most likely wanted a larger role than many teams were prepared to offer him, and with a number of hot young goalies entering the league this fall, there just wasn’t room for him.

Fast-forward two months, though, and Brodeur seems to be back.

The St. Louis Blues announced on Wednesday that Martin Brodeur would be joining the team, starting Friday. He’s being brought on to help out in the absence of the Blues’ starting netminder, Brian Elliott, who is out with a week-to-week lower body injury he sustained Tuesday night. Brodeur will most likely be either backing up Jake Allen, who has split netminding duties with Elliott this season, or filling in for AHL netminder Jordan Binnington, who plays for the team’s AHL affiliate, the Chicago Wolves.

Allen is coming off a monstrous AHL campaign, in which he posted a 2.03 GAA and a .928 SV% to win Goaltender of the Year for the league. Binnington, 21, is looking to follow in Allen’s footsteps — in nine AHL games this season, he has a .925 SV% and posts 1.89 GAA.

The team has not confirmed how long they expect Elliott to be out.
