It appears many in the New York Jets’ locker room, including Rex Ryan, Marty Mornhinweg and a number of players, wanted Michael Vick to remain the team’s starter.

The New York Jets announced Wednesday that Geno Smith has replaced Michael Vick as the team’s starting quarterback.
However, it doesn’t appear as if this was the desired choice for many key members of the Jets, including coach Rex Ryan and some players.
Sources: Jets OC Marty Mornhinweg wanted Mike Vick to continue to be Jets starting QB. (So did Rex Ryan before placating his superiors) #nyj

So, who did want Smith to start? ESPN is reporting that there’s a belief inside the organization that general manager John Idzik is behind the move, though Ryan is denying that’s the case.
"“It was 100 percent our decision,” said Ryan, adding that “the best thing for this team right now is to play Geno Smith.”Asked whether Idzik talked him out of starting Vick, Ryan said, “One hundred percent, no, he did not.”"
Based on all the reports, it seems likely Ryan’s denials are simply an attempt to prevent the public from knowing that it wasn’t his call to start Smith.
The Jets are simply a mess right now and the fact that the GM is apparently deciding who starts at quarterback is the latest proof.
