Dallas Stars‘ Ryan Garbutt will have hearing for his hit on Edmonton‘s Taylor Hall (video)

Ryan Garbutt, following his knee-on-knee hit to Edmonton Oilers forward Taylor Hall, will face the league for a disciplinary hearing on Thursday.

With this hearing, Dallas has now had two separate forwards subject to disciplinary action for choices they’ve made during games — fellow forward Antoine Roussel got in trouble just a few weeks ago, for sucker-punching San Jose Sharks defenseman Justin Braun during a scrum.

The league had initially announced that they would not be further investigating the situation, but amended their decision this afternoon with an announcement via Twitter.

This isn’t Garbutt’s first brush with the Department of Player Safety; last season, he was suspended for five games after charging Anaheim Ducks forward Dustin Penner during an early season game, and was fined for spearing fellow Ducks forward Corey Perry.

With Garbutt now one of multiple players this season to be back in front of NHL Player Safety, many are questioning whether or not he deserves a more severe suspension — not only for the violence of the hit, but for being a repeat offender. In the past, the league has had issues with disciplinary repeat offenders doing permanent damage to other players; although Hall was not injured on the play and continued to skate during the game, knee-on-knee collisions are often the cause of serious player injuries.

The league will announce their decision following the hearing Thursday.
