Mike London can breathe easy over the holiday weekend, as the University of Virginia announced that the football coach will return for the 2015 season.

The Cavaliers have made considerable progress, as they enter this weekend’s annual tilt against Virginia Tech needing a win over the Hokies to become bowl-eligible for the first time since they played in the Chick-fil-A Bowl in 2011. Virginia was 2-10 last season, which marked the fourth time in five campaigns that the school did not participate in the postseason.

UVA athletic director Craig Littlepage credited London and his coaching staff for “re-focusing its recruiting efforts to emphasize the need to attract student-athletes capable of helping the program compete at a high level in the expanded Atlantic Coast Conference.” Littlepage also stated the fact that the Cavaliers had made “signs of progress in many areas.”

London is in his fifth season as Virginia’s coach, as the program has gone 23-37 under his watch. The Cavs have not won more than eight games since former coach Al Groh took them to a 9-4 record and a trip to the Gator Bowl in 2007.

Virginia’s upswing has also been shown in its recruiting. The Cavaliers, who have struggled to bring in top talent in recent years, is currently ranked seventh in the ACC, according to 247sports.com. London and his staff currently have 21 verbal commitments, including four-star linebacker Jahvoni Simmons, regarded as one of the top players in the state of Virginia.
