Anaheim Ducks acquire Eric Brewer to replace Francois Beauchemin on depleted lineup

All things considered, the Anaheim Ducks have been miracle workers on what should have been a terrible start to the season.

Most teams stagger at even the slightest dents in their lineups; the Columbus Blue Jackets absolutely tanked when their team started floating in and out of the lineup with injuries almost every other night.

Despite numerous injuries and a pretty significant case (or two, or three) of the mumps, though, the Ducks have managed to remain atop the Western Conference; they sit in first in the Pacific Division with a 14-5-5 record to kick off the first few months of this year’s campaign.

Even the Ducks know that that kind of good fortune can only last for so long, though — on Friday, they announced that blue liner Eric Brewer would be heading from the Tampa Bay Lightning to California for a 2015 third-round draft pick.

Brewer, 35, has four assists and a plus-5 rating in his first 17 games of the season. He’s most likely going to get slotted into the lineup to replace Francois Beauchemin, who is out for the second time already this season (he was placed on injured reserve alongside Corey Perry when both players were diagnosed with mumps earlier in November; now he has a broken finger) — adding him will make it that much easier to also replace blue liner Clayton Stoner, who is the most recent NHL-er to go out with mumps.

Brewer had been a healthy scratch in the past five games for the Lightning, as the team boasts one of the deepest blue lines in the NHL.
