This year’s Territorial Cup had much bigger stakes than it usually does as the winner between Arizona and Arizona State was headed to the Pac-12 Championship Game following the surprising loss by UCLA against Stanford opening the door for a meeting with Marcus Mariota and the Oregon Ducks for the victor.
The game came down to a 4th-and-12 from the ASU 40 in the final minute with Arizona State needing a first down to keep their hopes of back-to-back division titles alive, but after the pass was incomplete, the Wildcats will get a rematch against the Ducks who they beat earlier this year and last year.
Freshman running back Nick Wilson paced the Arizona offensive attack with 177 yards and three touchdowns and quarterback Anu Solomon threw two touchdowns to Samaje Grant who had four catches and 91 yards in addition to the scores.
All-American candidate Scooby Wright led the defense that forced two turnovers and limited ASU to 1-3 on fourth down tries as he gets another chance to prove he’s the best defensive player in the country against Mariota who may be the best offensive player in the country and the leading candidate for the Heisman Trophy.
What’s your early prediction for the Pac-12 Championship Game from Santa Clara next week?
If Arizona beats Oregon for a second time could they force their way into the College Football Playoff?
