Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris is expected to be named the next head coach of the SMU Mustangs.
It is being widely reported that Clemson offensive coordinator Chad Morris will be named head coach of the Southern Methodist University (SMU) Mustangs. Morris, 45, began his collegiate coaching career as the offensive coordinator for Tulsa in 2010 before being hired as Clemson’s offensive coordinator the following year. Prior to being named offensive coordinator for Tulsa, Morris was a high school football coach in Texas since 1994.
Now, it seems that next year he will get his first shot at being a head coach at the collegiate level.

SMU head coach June Jones resigned this past September, which opened the door for Chad Morris. It makes sense that SMU would be looking for an offensive minded head coach. This season, SMU is ranked 127th in the nation in yards per game and 128th in points per game through 10 games.
That’s second-to-last and dead last, respectively.
Their stats aren’t any better defensively, but I’m sure they figure one problem at a time. Clemson is also one of the best teams defensively this season, so it’s possible Morris could bring over some of the defensive philosophies they used at Clemson to help SMU.
Morris signed a six-year deal back in December, 2011 which saw him earn $1.3 million per year. Signing this deal made Morris the highest paid assistant coach in the entire nation. His new deal is said to be a multi-year deal, earning the first-time head coach over $3 million per year.
While Morris is moving from one of the top football schools in the country to a lesser known school, he will attain valuable experience as a head coach and a hefty pay raise with it.
