After 1,259 regular-season games and 205 playoff appearances in a Devils uniform, goaltender Martin Brodeur stepped out on the ice in his first new team uniform in over twenty years.

The 42-year-old goaltender signed with the St. Louis Blues to a professional tryout contract earlier this week, when the team went on an emergency hunt for a new backup netminder. The team lost Brian Elliott, one of their two starters, with a week-to-week lower body injury Tuesday night — and while Jake Allen is good, he’s not good enough to carry the team solo in Elliott’s absence.

Brodeur took to free agency this summer for the first time since being drafted by the New Jersey Devils in the first round of the 1990 NHL Entry Draft. His play had declined too much for the team to continue allowing him to split the net with newcomer Cory Schneider, yet Brodeur wasn’t ready to call it quits — so, he tested the waters as soon as his final contract with the Metropolitan Division franchise expired.

After failing to get picked up by a team in the off-season, though, it seemed as if Brodeur was being forced into an early retirement; Elliott’s injury could be the opportunity Brodeur needs to show the league that he’s still got it.

Considering that Brodeur got drafted by the Devils about six months before I was even born, this was maybe the most rattling thing I’ve ever seen. Needless to say, the Blues may have found their saving grace — but it’s going to take the league a while to get used to seeing this.
