The Sacramento Kings had their protest of a November 13th loss to the Memphis Grizzlies denied by NBA commissioner Adam Silver on Friday.

At first glance, you might ask yourself: what does it even matter who won between the Kings and the Grizzlies? Welcome to the 2014-2015 season, because it actually stands to be quite significant.

More from Memphis Grizzlies

It is almost the end of November, and both the Grizzlies and the Kings are relevant. Memphis is at the top of the Western Conference, and the Kings are 9-6 on the season and in 9th place. It mattered, then, when the Grizzlies beat the Kings on a controversial buzzer beater earlier this month.

Courtney Lee made a layup with 0.3 seconds remaining. The Kings contested, however, that they tipped the inbounds pass, therefore starting the clock earlier and making it such that the winning layup would not count.

Sacramento filed a formal protest, and on Friday the NBA announced that it has been denied.

The back end of the Western Conference playoff race tends to be tight. If the Kings can sustain their strong start over the course of the season, this loss could truly make a difference in the standings. Unfortunately for the Kings, there wasn’t enough reason to overturn the play or change the outcome of this particular game.
