The Cardinals are still leading the NFC West and they want to keep it that way as they prepare to face the NFC South leading (albeit at 4-7) Falcons on Sunday. It’s slightly more personal for Patrick Peterson, though, as his rivalry with Jones goes back to their SEC days when Peterson was playing for LSU and Jones for Alabama.
Peterson offered his thoughts in a story from NFL.com.
"“He won a couple battles, I won a couple battles,” Peterson said this week, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “But I think for the most part I won the majority of those battles. (Jones is) an incredible athlete. Love the battle and the competition between us. It just brings out the best in both of us.”"
In the same story, Jones had his own take on the rivalry.
"“From my record, the only thing I can remember is, I won three and lost one,” Jones said. “I whipped him twice in college and I lost one time in college and I won the one time in the NFL. That’s the only thing I can remember. So, you can take that any kind of way.”"
If you’re keeping track, Jones believes he’s 3-1 against Peterson, while Peterson believes he’s got the majority of wins, however many that is. It’s a big matchup for both teams and players, regardless.
The Cardinals need to keep winning to keep their NFC West rivals the Seattle Seahawks from sneaking up on them. The Falcons are only leading their division by virtue of a tiebreaker against the New Orleans Saints, something that could disappear quickly.
Big game, big matchup, it looks like both players are ready to renew their rivalry.
