The Iron Bowl has turned into a shootout, with Amari Cooper hauling in a 75-yard touchdown catch to get Alabama to within 36-34 late in the third quarter.

This is not your father’s Iron Bowl.

Defense has basically gone out the window as this year’s edition of the annual clash between Alabama and Auburn has turned into a shootout.

The Crimson Tide got back to within two points at 36-34 when they took the kickoff after an Auburn field goal and went for it all on the first play.

Amari Cooper got behind cornerback Jonathon Mincy (and everyone else on the Tiger defense) and Blake Sims hit him in stride for a quick-strike 75-yard touchdown.

It was Cooper’s third touchdown reception of the day. He had a 17-yard touchdown grab in the first quarter and a 39-yard scoring catch earlier in the third period.

The “drive” took one play and ate up a whole 10 seconds on the clock.

This game is shaping up to be perhaps the highest-scoring Iron Bowl ever. The current mark is the 75 combined points in the 1969 game at Legion Field in Birmingham, Ala., when Auburn posted a 49-26 win over Alabama.

Last year’s game at Auburn—a 34-28 win for the Tigers—was the most combined points (62) in the 21st century in the rivalry. This is the 79th installment of the Iron Bowl, which dates back to 1893. Alabama leads the series 42-35-1.
