Auburn had a huge first half offensively against Alabama in the Iron Bowl Saturday night, helped in part by a trick play late in the second quarter.

When Auburn quarterback Nick Marshall lined up wide to the right on a first-and-10 play, the Alabama defense had to be thinking something tricky was coming.

They just didn’t think it would still end up being Marshall triggering the play.

With wide receiver Quan Bray lined up in the backfield with running back Corey Grant, Marshall drifted back from the line of scrimmage on the snap, took a pitch from Grant and found wide receiver Sammie Coates streaking across the middle.

The 40-yard gain set the Tigers up with a first-and-goal at the Alabama 1, but after Cameron Artis-Payne was thrown for a two-yard loss, Auburn settled for Daniel Carlson’s fourth field goal of the first half from 20 yards out.

That gave the Tigers a 26-21 halftime lead.

Marshall was 11-for-18 in the first half for 254 yards and three touchdowns as Auburn piled up 383 yards against the vaunted Alabama defense, which came into the game ranked fifth in the nation allowing just 283.5 yards per game.

Alabama (10-1) came into the game ranked No. 1 in the current College Football Playoff rankings.
