Rivalry games in football tend to bring out all the big hits, and Ohio State’s Corey Smith was definitely proof of that on Saturday against Michigan.
In the second half with the game tied at 21 apiece, the Buckeyes were driving down the field as they look to finally run away with this one. Quarterback J.T. Barrett swung the ball out to the tight end who had clear sailing ahead, except for a few Michigan defenders.
Well, Corey Smith took care of one of those defenders.
Watch in the video below as Smith just absolutely unloads on the chasing defender, giving his tight end a little more room to work with on the run.
You always want your receivers blocking downfield, especially if they’re going to pull off a block like this.
Plus, as should be noted in today’s day and age, that was a perfectly clean block. That right there is how you can still throw a vicious block in college football and not get the flag thrown on you. This is actually an acquired skill these days, given how frequently violent blocks like this are flagged, rightly or wrongly.
