LSU Tigers‘ head coach Les Miles, always an entertaining figure in the world of college football, attended to some important business this week by having a staring contest with a baby.
It wasn’t just any baby with whom Les Miles had a hard-fought staring contest. It was Bowden Ponder, daughter of Samantha and Christian Ponder.

Samantha Ponder remains relevant in the world of college football as one of ESPN’s top reporters for the sport. Interestingly enough, the last time Christian Ponder was relevant was when he played college football for the Florida State Seminoles. In that sense, it is only fitting that their daughter is named in honor of his college coach.
Granted, the decision to name your daughter after Bobby Bowden is highly questionable indeed, but it sure makes for an interesting situation here.
So there Bowden Ponder was, in the arms of her mom, and Les Miles wanted a piece.
Staring contest.
With any other college coach, the notion of a staring contest with a baby might seem odd. It is fun and entertaining, but it would certainly not be the headline you expected to see.
But when the man is Les Miles, you hear about a staring contest with a baby, and you think: “Yep, that sounds about right.”
