Mississippi State head coach Dan Mullen has won four of the last five games against in-state rival Ole Miss entering this year’s Eff Bowl, but after facing the stout Landshark defense, he has now lost two of the last three, including the last two at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium.
Ole Miss not only won the Egg Bowl but the win also ended any chances of Mississippi State winning the SEC West and advancing to the SEC Championship Game has Alabama lost in the Iron Bowl to Auburn.
Sophomore tight end Evan Engram was the x-factor on offense for Ole Miss as he was responsible for every big play the Rebels had in the passing game and finished with five receptions for 176 yards. His 83-yard reception set up Jeremy Liggins for a one-yard touchdown that gave Ole Miss a 14-10 lead with 8:08 left in the third quarter.
Mississippi State’s offense was unable to get on track all afternoon against one of the toughest defenses in the nation as they bottled up Dak Prescott and the Bulldogs running game that averaged 3.5 yards per carry on 47 carries.
Ole Miss extended their lead after an unsuccessful Mississippi State field goal when Gary Wunderlich drilled a 39-yarder and following a punt by Mississippi State that was downed at the nine-yard line, the Rebels put this one away.
Jaylen Walton took the handoff and raced 91 yards to the end zone to take a 24-10 lead into the fourth quarter.
Mississippi State didn’t quit, however, and Prescott connected with De’Runnya Wilson for a nice touchdown, but it was too little too late as that would be as close as they would get to the win, to the SEC west title and the College Football Playoff.
Hugh Freeze pulled out one of his favorite trick plays when he called the halfback pass on the ensuing possession and Jordan Wilkins hit Cody Core for the game’s final touchdown as Ole Miss puled off the 31-17 win in the Egg Bowl.
