No. 1 Star: Ryan Miller
On Friday night Vancouver Canucks goaltender Ryan Miller stopped all 31 Columbus Blue Jackets shots to earn his second consecutive shutout (the third shutout for Miller this season). Miller has not allowed a goal in 152 minutes of play and currently leads the NHL with 15 wins. He has lead the Canucks on a 6-1-1 run which has them vying for first in the Western Conference with 33 points. The Canucks had what you would describe as a tumultuous offseason, so it is surprising to see them doing so well. Ryan Miller seems to have found a new home in Vancouver, after his run in Buffalo came to an end and a failed attempt to catch on in St. Louis.
No. 2 Star: Blake Comeau
When the Pittsburgh Penguins announced first-line right wing Pascal Dupuis would miss several months with a blood clot, it was expected that the Penguins would have to look for some help externally in order to fill Dupuis’ spot. Perhaps that would be the case with your average team – but average is not a word you usually use with the Penguins. Instead, the Penguins decided to place Blake Comeau on a line with Evgeni Malkin and Chris Kunitz. That decision paid off just 26 seconds into Wednesday’s game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, with Comeau opening up the scoring. He added his second goal of the night mid-way through the second period to give the Penguins a 3-2 lead. Comeau shared forward duties with Sidney Crosby during overtime and netted the game winner at 2:53 of the OT period – giving the Penguins the win and Comeau a hat trick.
No. 3 Star: Martin St. Louis
Martin St. Louis became the 81st player in NHL history to reach 1,000 career points with a two-point afternoon against the Philadelphia Flyers on Friday. Point number 999 came on an assist to Dominic Moore 7:20 into the first period. The big 1000th point came 4:14 into the second with St. Louis scoring on a rebound. It is a tremendous accomplishment for a player that many thought would never make it in the NHL. Now St. Louis is 39, has 1,000 points and a Stanley Cup Championship with the Tampa Bay Lightning to his name.
