David Robertson turned down the New York Yankees’ qualifying offer to go into free agency and according to a report, he has a $39 million offer on the table.

David Robertson saved 39 games in 44 opportunities in his first season as the closer for the New York Yankees and reportedly has a three-year, $39 million offer on the table.

According to CBS Sports’ Jon Heyman, there is a team out there who has made that offer, citing a rival executive.

Robertson turned down the Yankees’ qualifying offer of $15.3 million for next year, which would have set a record for a relief pitcher’s salary.

Robertson had the daunting task of replacing the legendary Mariano Rivera, who closed for the Yankees from 1997-2013 and left as the game’s all-time leader in saves.

New York is focused on finding a shortstop to replace another franchise icon, Derek Jeter, who retired at the end of the 2014 season, but GM Brian Cashman wants to keep Robertson, according to the report.

However, the Yankees may be reluctant to offer Robertson, who will be 30 in April, a fourth year.

Robertson was an All-Star in 2011 as a setup man, when he posted a 1.08 ERA and 1.125 WHIP in 70 appearances and 66.2 innings with 100 strikeouts.

Last season, Robertson had a 3.08 ERA and 1.057 WHIP and struck out 96 in 64.1 innings, but he surrendered a career-worst seven home runs.

Robertson was a 17th-round pick by the Yankees out of the University of Alabama in the 2006 amateur draft and reached the majors in June 2008.
