It appears that the Florida Gators already have a pretty good idea who they want to lead their program beginning next season, and they could be looking to Colorado State’s Jim McElwain.

Following the loss to Florida State on Saturday, Will Muschamp is officially no longer the head coach of the Florida Gators, meaning that all eyes will be on the search for the next head man in Gainesville.

However, the search may not last all that long.

According to Pat Forde of Yahoo Sports, Colorado State head coach Jim McElwain has already emerged as the leading candidate to land the job, and the Gators have been doing their homework on him since they announced that Muschamp would not be returning in 2015.

McElwain has been the head coach at Colorado State for the last three seasons, and he has done nothing but improve the program. He’s compiled a 22-16 record during his short tenure at the helm, but they have drastically improved every season. This year the Rams are 10-2, which is why McElwain’s name is on the short list for a lot of schools that are looking for head coaches.

Now it should be noted that the 52-year-old McElwain does have a $7.5 million buyout in his deal, but it could be well worth it for Florida in the end, and they do have the money to get it done.
