Arizona Cardinals safety Tyrann Mathieu broke his thumb in Sunday’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons but is hopeful he won’t have to miss any time due to the injury

Tyrann Mathieu wants to play despite suffering a broken thumb in the Cardinals loss on Sunday to the Falcons and head coach Bruce Arians thinks that is a possibility, although no final determination has been made with the second-year safety.

The Cardinals are losing steam in the wake of the season-ending knee injury to Carson Palmer having lost two straight since opening the season at 9-1, so the loss of Mathieu would be another blow to the team with their sights on the NFC West title and a first round bye in the playoffs.

Arians said Mathieu could get a cast on the thumb and still suit up and play, but it is also possible that he may need to have a pin inserted which would keep him off the field for three weeks.

Mathieu tore his ACL toward the end of last season and missed time at the beginning of the year as he recovered from the injury and worked his way back to full health but in 11 games he has 30 combined tackles, one interception and one fumble recovery as the team’s starting free safety.

If Mathieu is unable to suit up at least the Cardinals are optimistic that wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald will be able to return to the field after missing the last two games with a knee injury.
