Dolphins Vs Jets Final Score: Dolphins Sneak By Jets, 16-13
By Hayden Kane
The Miami Dolphins won an ugly but important divisional game on Monday night as they defeated the New York Jets by the final score of 16-13 to wrap up the NFL schedule for week 13.
It was the fourth quarter of Monday Night Football. The highlight of a potential go-ahead field goal played, and as Nick Folk‘s kick fluttered left of the uprights in slow motion, ESPN analyst Jon Gruden said the following sentence to describe the night’s action:
“The New York Jets are doing everything they can to lose this game.”

That pretty much summed things up. This game plodded along, with the Jets leading for much of the way, yet there was an air of inevitability to the affair. And to contrast Gruden’s analysis, it actually felt like the Jets game-planned to not lose, insofar as they did not want quarterback Geno Smith to sabotage their hopes of a victory. The plan almost worked, but ultimately the Dolphins pulled out the win 16-13.
In what can only be described as a college-esque split, the Jets attempted only 15 passes against 49 rushes in this game. It wasn’t that the ground game didn’t work for the Jets; as a team, they averaged 5.7 yards per attempt. The problem was, between the lack of touchdowns and the missed field goals, the Jets could not muster any actual points.
That left the door open for the Dolphins to win by not having to do very much despite trailing most of the night. Two scoring drives in the fourth quarter, and the Dolphins came back to win.
Ryan Tannehill did not play particularly well, completing 25 of 35 passes for 235 yards. The good news for him was that he played opposite the aforementioned Smith, who completed only seven passes for 65 yards, making Tannehill look like a regular NFL superstar.
The Jets held an early 10-0 lead and then a 10-3 lead at halftime thanks to an early touchdown from Greg Salas and that commitment to the run. They then spent the second half continuing to run the ball, failing to capitalize on any opportunities, and giving the Dolphins chance after chance to take over.
Ultimately the Dolphins took advantage. The only Miami touchdown came on a Lamar Miller run, tying things up at 13-13:
Then, with two minutes left, Caleb Sturgis banged home a chip-shot field goal to seal the win.
The Jets were like watching a really depressing version of the Auburn Tigers’ offense. Chris Johnson did rush for 105 yards while Chris Ivory pitched in another 62 yards on the ground, but I dare you to find somebody who cares. New York did everything they could to hide Geno Smith, and it only worked to the extent that it did because the Dolphins almost stubbed their toes.
Hat’s off to the Dolphins’ defense for not breaking despite the big chunks of yards on the ground. They ended the game on a depressingly predictable interception from Smith:
With the win, ugly though it was, the Dolphins slot themselves into the sixth and final playoff spot in the AFC. As for the Jets, it’s back to the depressing existence that is the “assessment” of Geno Smith and the eventual firing of Rex Ryan.
