Florida running back Matt Jones is leaving the Gators early and will enter the 2015 NFL Draft

Matt Jones is leaving Florida early as the team’s leading rusher will enter the 2015 NFL Draft, according to Gator Country. Jones leads Florida with 817 yards on 166 carries and has six touchdowns. During his career in Gainesville, Jones has rushed 297 times for 1,431 yards and 11 touchdowns.

Jones doesn’t project as a high pick in a draft that is as strong at running back as any in recent memory with Melvin Gordon, Todd Gurley and Tevin Coleman among the backs expected to be taken early.

Early comes with a caveat for the running back position as the position has been devalued in recent years and the 2014 draft was proof of that as Bishop Sankey didn’t get called until the 54th pick, the latest the first running back had been drafted. The record had been set one year earlier when Gio Bernard was the 37th pick.

Jones won’t get drafted that early but he could help a team in the mid-late rounds if his health checks out with teams. Jones had one knee surgery in high school and one at Florida where he has been limited in practice to prevent any more injuries to the team’s leading rusher.

He has split carries with sophomore and former top recruit Kelvin Taylor this year and that time share is likely to follow him wherever his professional career takes him.
