Purdue junior guard Stephen Toyra has been granted permission by the NCAA to use his own likeness in advertisements for his real estate firm.

In a story in which only the nonsense of the NCAA could make real, Purdue guard Stephen Toyra is being allowed to use his own name and picture as he sees fit. Too bad it took three attempts to get permission to do so before it was allowed.

Toyra, a former walk on who earned a scholarship, is a licensed real estate agent. He launched Family Realty Group this summer in an effort to get a head start on his post-basketball career.

The NCAA was having none of it though, and refused to let Toyra use his own name or picture on the company’s ads according to Sports Illustrated. If he did so without the organization’s permission, he would have lost the remaining two years of eligibility

The problem is that his company cannot operate without using his name and picture. Using those of the licensed agents is standard operating procedure in the industry. Not being able to do so for the companies principal agent would have put them in a major competitive disadvantage.

After two petitions, the NCAA allowed Toyra had only agreed to allow him to use his first name. Toyra then applied for special waiver, which was finally granted, provided that he didn’t mention his affiliation with Purdue . This finally gave Toyra the right to use his own likeness without relinquishing his remaining eligibility.

Toyra has played 11 minutes combined in Purdue’s first six games this season.
