The Seattle Mariners snagged a top free agent last winter in Robinson Cano and their push for the postseason in 2014 has motivated them to hand a fat deal to slugger Nelson Cruz.

When the Seattle Mariners threw over $200 million at former New York Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano, many assumed it would be another bad contract that killed another team. Instead of that happening, the Mariners made a push for the postseason and nearly made it in as a Wild Card team.

Getting so close to the postseason has apparently motivated the Mariners to go out and spend again in free agency. To accompany Robinson Cano in the lineup, the Mariners have reportedly agreed to a deal with slugger Nelson Cruz.

The report, passed along by Enrique Rojas from ESPN Deportes, states that Cruz is set to receive $57 million over the next four years.

Cruz slugged his way to this fat contract in Baltimore last year where he was a huge part of the ALCS team that nearly made it to the World Series. It wasn’t meant to be though, but Cruz is now going to be a part of something similarly special in Seattle.

The Mariners haven’t been good for a long time, and while they came close to making the postseason this year they’ll need to get their this year to be seen as a success. Signing Cruz puts pressure on the team to win but it also gives them an excellent bat to insert into the lineup to help them meet those now high expectations.
