Steve Spurrier will be returning to the sidelines as the head coach of South Carolina next season, the legendary coach confirmed on Monday to GoGamecocks.com.
Spurrier and South Carolina were less than ideal this year, finishing up the year with a 6-6 record after many had picked them in the preseason to win the SEC East, but that will not shy Spurrier away from returning to Columbia.
“I’m in. I’m in,” Spurrier said. “We had some down times and some of this, that and the other, but we’ve got a lot of good players on the way.”
Of course, this prompted the question of just how many more years he has left in him, and that number has dropped a bit from what he used to answer with.
“Give me two or three more,” he said. “I used to say four or five, now I’m down to two or three. I mean, I could get in a car wreck, but I’m definitely planning on being back.”
South Carolina was chosen as the preseason favorite in the SEC East after three straight seasons of 11 overall wins, however they had problems in virtually all facets of the game, especially on the defensive side of the ball.
Still, even with the down year, Spurrier and the Gamecocks are eligible for a bowl bid with their six wins.
Spurrier turns 70 next spring.
